MSU's kicking battle wide open -- for now

MSU's kicking battle wide open -- for now: "Neither sophomore Todd Boleski nor freshman Brett Swenson has taken the lead in Michigan State's competition to find its next placekicker.
According to coaches, they've been about even over the first week of practice.
'It's college football and his leg is about to drop off,' coach John L. Smith said of Swenson on Friday. 'It happens to all guys who come in for the first time, so we've kind of had him lay off a little bit. But I like what I'm seeing so far.'
As for Boleski, Smith said the 6-feet-6, 214-pound standout from spring workouts hasn't fallen off from his performances a few months ago.
'He doesn't know how good he can be,' Smith said. 'He just has a big leg. He's competing. I like how the two guys are handling everything.'
Smith said he could wait until the season opener to decide which player will kick if both remain competitive. Another option is using both during the season -- Swenson for short-yardage situations and Boleski for longer distances."
