"May Day is upon us – the day when the Communists, Socialists, Marxists and other nuts take to the streets to protest capitalism, individual freedom and America.

Coincidentally – I’m sure – it’s the same day immigration reform advocates will be marching en masse across America demanding amnesty for illegals."

» When It Comes To ‘Pollution,’ Most Of It Is In the Media’s Mind

"Ergo, according to ALA, the number of Americans breathing unhealthy air increased by sixteen per cent over a two year period, from 42% to 58%.

This suggests two things: a) air pollution emissions over that two year period must have increased, and b) the concentrations of air pollutants in the atmosphere must have gone up as well.

The only problem is that neither of those things actually happened."

Meddlers at the gate

Meddlers at the gate - The New Editor
"How many voters are aware that the pending Senate reform bill includes a payback to unions in the form of a 'proxy access' that would allow labor to manipulate company boards?
How many are aware that the bill may give the Treasury Department the right to seize private property and businesses without any significant judicial review?"

A Rosemary Woods moment

I called the county earlier this morning to buy an audio CD of yesterday's full county board meeting.
The official minutes sorta left out much of the content out:
"Public Participation
Jim Riley addressed the Board regarding Board Rules and public participation.
John McNally addressed the Board.
Chuck Woods thanked the Board for letter of support regarding Muskegon River Trailways
and Regional Association Letter of Support.
Chairman Mahoney recognized Dave Kieft, Muskegon Charter Township Supervisor, Mike
Thompson, Egelston Township Supervisor and Chuck Woods, City of North Muskegon
Council Member."
I was told someone would call me back when they were available and a nice woman just called and told me she was checking the "tape" but it had stopped about half way during the meeting.

update:
The county clerk's office just called me and said they were sorry but the second half of the county commission full board meeting was just "not on the recording" so I wouldn't be able to buy a copy.

So, "they" have decided to abbreviate the official minutes.

To the benefit of our community?

Or is the county board of commissioners going to the mattresses?

Or is it the clerk who has decided just what the public should or should not see?

And now the recording just poofed away.

But the county web site still proclaims "Muskegon County welcomes public participation".

Yeah right....

Rosemary Woods would be proud.

How to Tackle Government Labor Costs

Gary Shilling: How to Tackle Government Labor Costs - WSJ.com
Years ago, there was an informal "social contract"—public employees generally received lower wages than private-sector workers, and in return they got earlier retirement and generous pensions, allowing them to catch up. That arrangement has long since gone by the boards.

The result is a remarkable trend. State and local government employees for years have received pay increases in excess of inflation, and BLS figures show they now have wages that are 34% higher on average than in the private sector.

.... The average quit rate among state and local employees is a third of that in the private sector.

Public employees also have a 70% advantage in benefits..... In 2009, BLS figures indicate that the costs of health insurance were 2.18 times as much for state and local employees as for private-sector workers.

In the private sector, defined-benefit pensions have declined over the years in favor of defined-contribution plans such as the 401(k). In 2009, defined-benefit plans were available to only 21% of private-sector workers—but to 84% of municipal employees, according to the Cato Institute. And public-sector defined-benefit plans paid retirees about twice as much as those in the private sector.

Public-sector retirement costs also are high because many can retire at age 55 after 30 years of employment with pensions equal to 60% or more of final salary, which is often jacked up by lots of overtime in final working years. In some states, employees can "double dip" by retiring early and then resuming their previous jobs or taking other government positions. So they get salaries and pensions at the same time.

The answer to the problem is to attend to the problem, public sector unions, union rules and overpaid, underworked employees.

If you don't acknowledge the problem, you won't fix the problem.

"Advice to Tea Partiers
Posted by Chris Moody
The Tea Party movement may endure, but its endurance will be a testament to its ability to understand that cutting government means having a long-term focus, says John Samples, author of the Cato book The Struggle to Limit Government. In a new video, Samples outlines an assessment of what Tea Partiers should do if they want to sustain an effort to cut government.
He offers five pieces of advice for members of the Tea Party movement:
1. Republicans aren’t always your friends.
2. Some tea partiers like big government.
3. Democrats aren’t always your enemies.
4. Smaller government demands restraint abroad.
5. Leave social issues to the states."

MEGAN MCARDLE:
The most terrifying words I’ve seen written so far about the growing crisis in Greece were penned by Yves Smith yesterday: “So the whole idea that the financial crisis was over is being called into doubt. Recall that the Great Depression nadir was the sovereign debt default phase. And the EU’s erratic responses (obvious hesitancy followed by finesses rather than decisive responses) is going to prove even more detrimental as the Club Med crisis grinds on.”
The Great Depression was composed of two separate panics. As you can see from contemporary accounts–and I highly recommend that anyone who is interested in the Great Depression read the archives of that blog along with Benjamin Roth’s diary of the Great Depression–in 1930 people thought they’d seen the worst of things.
I hope that history isn’t repeating itself.

Bill to check city bankruptcies advances

Bill to check city bankruptcies advances - SignOnSanDiego.com

While San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders insists bankruptcy is not on the city’s agenda, his administration is nevertheless alarmed over a labor-mounted campaign to take away the right of municipalities to declare insolvency and cancel contracts with their public employee unions.

The Senate Local Government Committee on Monday approved legislation that would require cities to first secure permission from an obscure appointed state agency before they could file for bankruptcy.

This simply means that a democrat/union controlled "agency" would deny a city's obligation to declare bankruptcy when there was no other option..... unless there was the option of forcing taxpayers to pay more.

No need to change union pay/benefits/retirement just like any other bankruptcy,

This will doom any hope of our municipalities to survive the attack of the public service union onslaught.

Media Heresy: Bill Clinton Helped Cause 2008 Financial Crisis

Media Heresy: Bill Clinton Helped Cause 2008 Financial Crisis NewsBusters.org

On Saturday, a former editorial page editor for the Wall Street Journal, George Melloan, made the connection even stronger as he pointed a finger at someone most in the media have shamelessly given a pass for his involvement in this crisis

To promote "affordable" housing, Bill Clinton had excused the two giant government-sponsored housing finance agencies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, from normal banking rules, allowing them leverage ratios far in excess of the limits on ordinary lenders.

Banks were forced to write risky mortgage loans, a large number of which were then folded into mortgage-backed securities that Fannie, Freddie and others sold internationally with triple-A ratings.

This business seized up, crippling banks throughout the world, when holders began to realize that the assets that backed the securities, home mortgages, were going under water at an alarming rate.

Government employees' health benefits are, he says, '41 percent more expensive' than those of the average Fortune 500 company. Without changes in current law, 'spending will have increased 322 percent in 20 years -- over 16 percent a year.' There is, he says, a connection between the state's being No. 1 in total tax burden and being No. 1 in the proportion of college students who, after graduating, leave the state.
Partly to pay for teachers' benefits -- most contribute nothing to pay for their health insurance -- property taxes have increased 70 percent in 10 years, to an average annual cost to homeowners of $7,281. Christie proposes a 2.5 percent cap on annual increases."

Tea Party is a ‘bowel movement,’ says ACORN boss Bertha Lewis The Daily Caller
"ACORN chief organizer Bertha Lewis praised socialism and said the Tea Party was a “bowel movement” filled with racists in a speech to a left-wing youth group, a new video shows.
.....The comments by Lewis came during a March 25 speech to the winter conference of the Young Democratic Socialists, which is the youth arm of the radical Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

DSA is closely tied to the Congressional Progressive Caucus, an 80-plus member group of left-wing Democratic lawmakers.

President Obama worked for ACORN’s Project Vote affiliate, trained ACORN organizers and represented ACORN as a lawyer.

Although ACORN leaders typically refuse to be labeled as socialists because they realize the term carries with it a negative connotation in American culture, Lewis openly embraced socialism.
First of all let me just say any group that says, ‘I’m young, I’m democratic, and I’m a socialist,’ is alright with me,” Lewis said."

With a "caring" teacher/mentor to provide answers to any student's inconvenient questions.

And today's "Earth Day" continues the eco-madrassah madness.

PETER WEHNER: Bill Clinton’s Double Standard On Rhetoric.
“The problem for Mr. Clinton is that his concern about the dangers of incendiary rhetoric seems to have taken flight during the two terms of the Bush presidency, as well as during his own.
Regarding the former, there was, for starters, the 2006 film, The Death of a President, on the assassination of President Bush. . . .
Moreover, George W. Bush was, during his two terms in office, routinely called a war criminal, an international terrorist, and compared to Hitler [see a photo gallery here and here].

Signs with bullet holes in Bush’s forehead, with blood running down his face, were all part of the fun and games.

The president was accused of moral cowardice by Al Gore, of being a liar and the anti-Christ, and of being a totalitarian and dictatorial leader.

Members of Congress such as Keith Ellison compared the attacks on September 11 to the Reichstag fire. . . .

It’s also worth recalling that the Clinton administration organized, coordinated, and participated in some of the ugliest rhetoric we have seen in recent American politics.”

Clinton’s remarks are serving the salutary purpose of reminding people who and what he really was, and dispelling the glow of nostalgia for his presidency that even some conservatives and libertarians were beginning to feel.

"Lenartowicz was also the financial supervisor for the Muskegon County sheriff's department."

Very sad when one so young and promising dies.

But, I suspect the police are looking at:
1. The "Celestial Bullet". The heart attack, fall or stroke that comes out of nowhere for a young person.
2. Random crime. A burglar or neighbor problem that just hit at the wrong time.
3. Marital/girlfriend/etc. problems. I see no mention of his wife/children/girlfriend/boyfriend. Any bad blood going on?
4. Suicide. Lots of possibilities for a young politician but I'd focus on his "financial supervisor for the Muskegon County sheriff's department" position. Lot's of opportunity to make mistakes there.
And plenty of precedent in Muskegon....and Wall Street.

How sad that I hope it's a stroke or heart attack.

BBC News - Volcanic ash incidents involving airliners
"The US Geological Survey says at least 102 aircraft encountered volcanic ash clouds between 1973 and 2003.

The risk is naturally greater when aircraft fly in areas of volcanic activity.

Studies suggest that ash from the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991 was responsible for 20 incidents involving aircraft. One US airline grounded its aircraft at Manila for several days.

When Mount Popocatepetl in Mexico erupted in 1997, there was minor disruption to flights, with one crew experiencing such reduced visibility after landing they had to look through the flight deck's side windows to see where they were going."

Theses are big eruptions, with little commercial airline interruption and no fatalities.

Climategate: a scandal that won’t go away

Climategate: a scandal that won’t go away
"If you were faced with by far the biggest bill of your life, would you not want to be confident that there was a very good reason why you should pay it?
That is why we need to know just how far we can trust the science behind the official view that the world is threatened with catastrophe by global warming – because the measures proposed by our politicians to avert this supposed disaster threaten to transform our way of life out of recognition and to land us with easily the biggest bill in history.
(The Climate Change Act alone, says the Government, will cost us all £18 billion every year until 2050.)"

.....The crown jewels of the IPCC’s case that the world faces catastrophic warming have been all those graphs based on tree rings which purport to show that temperatures have lately been soaring to levels never known before in history – thus eradicating all the evidence that the world was hotter than today during the Medieval Warm Period, long before any rise in CO2 levels.
Best known of these graphs, of course, was Michael Mann’s “hockey stick”, comprehensively discredited by the expert Canadian statistician Stephen McIntyre and Professor Ross McKitrick.

But the IPCC was able to defend its case with the aid of another set of “hockey sticks”, based on different tree rings, produced by Mann’s close allies at the CRU.
The most widely quoted of the Climategate emails was that from the CRU’s director, Philip Jones, saying that he had used “Mike’s Nature trick” to “hide the decline”.

If there was anything in the CRU’s record which a proper inquiry should have addressed it was the story behind this email, because what it highlighted was the device used by the CRU to get round the fact that its tree-ring data hopelessly failed to show the result the warmist establishment wanted.

When their Siberian tree rings showed temperatures in the late 20th century sharply dropping rather than rising, the “trick” used by Prof Jones and his colleague Dr Keith Briffa, copied from Mike Mann’s own “hockey stick”, was simply to delete the downward curve shown by the tree rings, replacing them with late 20th-century temperature data to show the dramatic warming they wanted.

The significance of this sleight of hand can scarcely be exaggerated.

Why, in using this misleading graph, did the IPCC not explain the trick that had been played by its leading scientists?
If tree rings were so inadequate in reflecting 20th-century temperatures, why should they be relied on to reflect temperatures in earlier centuries?
Why, when fresh Siberian tree ring data came to light, making a nonsense of the CRU’s earlier temperature reconstructions, did the CRU simply ignore the new data?

Anyone who has followed the meticulous analysis of this curious story by Steve McIntyre on his Climate Audit website might well conclude that we are looking here at a complete travesty of proper scientific procedure, matched only by the bizarre methods used by Mann himself to construct his original hockey stick.
Yet these are the men, Mann, Jones and Briffa, who acted as the “lead authors” of the key chapters of the IPCC’s 2001 and 2007 reports.

Spending, Not Tax Cuts, Is the Real Driver of the Fiscal Mess

Spending, Not Tax Cuts, Is the Real Driver of the Fiscal Mess — The American, A Magazine of Ideas
"To balance the budget over the next 25 years, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says, would require an immediate and permanent increase in tax revenues, or reduction in spending outlays, equal to 5.4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).

To put that in context, that equals a 29 percent increase in all federal tax revenues relative to historical levels.
That means not just income taxes, but payroll taxes, corporate taxes, capital gains and dividends taxes, and other sources of revenue.
And it doesn’t mean just a 29 percent increase in tax rates, but—to account for the disincentive effects of higher taxes—even higher rates so that total revenue rises by 29 percent.

That’s a pretty big deal."

Recovery? Hah! Just Oscillating Unemployment Claims. « Uncommon Misconceptions
"For the past 5 1/2 months, the initial unemployment claims data have not really changed.
Here’s what I mean:

The data are oscillating about a slowly increasing value, indicating that, if anything, unemployment claims are increasing.
That means that for the past 5 1/2 months, every time the administration has told us that the unemployment situation is slowly recovering, and that the data show “the right trend,” they have been absolutely mistaken.

The media has been doing their typical baby duck analysis: every day is a brand new day, every unemployment claims report is the first one they’ve ever seen.
So we get headlines like, “job situation improving” when the number of claims drops, and “unexpected increase” when the number rises.

For half a year the claims data has just been oscillating – going nowhere.
And nobody seems to have noticed."

'Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase.
Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.'

Got that? 'Not any of your taxes.'
The claim of no tax hikes on those below $250,000 as a result of the current administration's policies is completely and utterly false.

A report from the House Ways & Means Committee's GOP members notes that, since January 2009, Congress and the president have enacted $670 billion in tax increases.
That's $2,100 for each person in America.
At least 14 of those tax hikes, the report says, break Obama's pledge not to raise taxes on those earning less than $250,000.
Roughly $316 billion of the tax hikes — 14 increases in all — hit middle-class families, the report says."

The Teacher Pension Nightmare

The Teacher Pension Nightmare - Forbes.com
"Pension and retirement plans all over America have lost value.
Plans covering public school teachers, by their own admission, are underfunded by $332 billion.

However, the plans' real funding gap is far worse than their financial statements show, at nearly a trillion dollars--and you and I will bear the burden of covering their shortfall.

The story of how this happened is familiar:
States expanded their promises to retirees when times were good.
Then, the economy tanked, pension assets fell in value and states skirted their obligations to deposit cash in pension funds--all causing a funding gap.
But because benefits are contractually guaranteed, the obligation to cover any funding shortfall lies with taxpayers."

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — New Mexico State men’s basketball coach Marvin Menzies says Jahmar Young will not return for his senior season and redshirt freshman Jacoby Patton has been dismissed from the team indefinitely.

Menzies made the announcement in a statement issued by the university today.

Young was arrested early Sunday and charged with battery on a peace officer after he and a group of people were reportedly being disruptive inside a Las Cruces convenience store.
Young claimed not to know who Michigan State point guard Kalin Lucas was before the teams met in the first round of the NCAA tournament last month.

"We don't shy away from battles," Young said at the time. "We like tough games, you know. It's also a plus to play a name … what's his name?"
"Kalin Lucas."

"Kalin Lucas. I really never even heard of him. But if he's that good, it'll show."

Patton was also arrested on a misdemeanor charge following the same incident with Young.
