Noting that Michigan ranks 10th in the nation for obesity, said changes are needed.
"We have a broken system," he said.
At a news conference announcing his initiatives, he weighed himself -- 194 pounds -- and had his blood pressure measured -- 142 over 80.
Snyder said he plans to post his health statistics on a website, so the public can track his attempts to live a healthier lifestyle.
He also said he wants doctors to monitor the body weight of young patients and to report their body mass index to a state registry.
The children's identity would remain anonymous, and the data would be used to monitor pediatric obesity.
