The Community Foundation for Muskegon County also connected them to donors who had an interest in beach safety.
The city, however, was less supportive, according to the Kallens.
Officials, including those from the Planning, Zoning and Recreation Department, told them that city ordinances prohibited them from placing the signs on the beach and that they would be fined if they violated the ordinances, the Kallens said.
Cathy Brubaker-Clarke, the city's department director, did not return phone calls and messages left by MLive and the Muskegon Chronicle."
