"Boaters who take passengers for hire need to hold Coast Guard captain’s licenses and submit their watercraft to regular boat inspections.
People who fall afoul of the charter boat laws risk fines up to $1,000, jail terms of up to a year and the seizure of their boats."
“Our legal charter boats out there … we’re probably running about 1,600 in the state,” Jurcich said. When an unlicensed competitor undercuts market prices, “we start getting calls from the legitimate operators.”
