"KENTWOOD, MI – Just before going to a playground at Pinebrook Village, Jamarion Lawhorn took a knife, with an 8-inch blade, from his kitchen and walked out with it at his side.
Michael Connor Verkerke, 9, was playing at the park with his brother.
Lawhorn didn’t know Connor.

He stabbed him in the back, then waited for police.
Connor ran home.
His father frantically put pressure on his wounds.
Connor, the son of Dani and Jared Verkerke, died an hour later at the hospital.
Soon after the killing, Lawhorn – with his mother and stepfather at his side – said simply: “I stabbed him.”
He told police he wanted to go to jail, or die.
His stepfather interrupted: “So you just went and stabbed somebody?”
The boy replied, “Yep. 
The statements are contained in a delinquency petition filed Friday in Kent County Circuit Court. Prosecutors are trying Lawhorn as an adult in the Monday, Aug. 4, killing.
The petition contains Kentwood Police reports that describe the horror of the attack - and Lawhorn’s response, both to neighbors immediately afterward, and to police at a hospital where he was taken.
“Jamarion was asked why he did that and he stated because he wanted to go to jail,” an investigator wrote."
