"MUSKEGON HEIGHTS — Franklin Brewer will serve again on the Muskegon Heights school board.
Brewer, of 2320 Fifth, and write-in candidate Kassandra Kitchen, 75 E. Maplewood, ran in the May 6 election for the four-year seat vacated by longtime board member Dwight Vines.
Brewer received 258 votes and Kitchen received 166 votes. Results were delayed because of Kitchen's write-in candidacy.
Brewer lost his bid for re-election to the school board in 2006 by four votes to Antonio Suhuba-Baruti, and lost another bid for election to the school board in 2007."

This year, testing of fourth and eighth graders have shown improvements by 12% and 4% respectively, in only a year. They still have a long way to go, but this is real progress from a completely failed school system in a short turnaround time. The major reason being given for this success is the quality of teachers they were able to attract."

"Myanmar's military-backed constitution has apparently won significant support in a referendum, even though many in the country were unable to vote as they tried to cope with the devastation of a cyclone which left many thousands of dead and missing in its wake, media reports from the region said Saturday.
Local counting of ballots indicated that an average of 80% to 90% voted in favor of the draft charter, the Associated Press reported."

A new law regulating the post office makes it easier to raise rates as long as the agency doesn't exceed the rate of inflation. Rates are to be adjusted each May.

The increase comes just a week after the post office announced it had a loss of $700 million in the second quarter of the fiscal year, blamed largely on declining mail volume and rising fuel prices.

"The San Diego chapter, founded 61 years ago, was the first national fraternity on campus and has 65 members.
Theta Chi's San Diego chapter declined to comment. The chapter occupies two low-slung homes a block off Fraternity Row, with large red-and-white Greek symbols propped on the roof.
Theta Chi has 131 chapters in the U.S. and Canada and more than 161,000 initiates. It was founded in 1856.
University police launched their investigation into drug sales on campus after Shirley Poliakoff, 19, died from a cocaine overdose in May 2007. Investigators discovered many students in fraternities were aware of organized drug dealing within their houses.
As the investigation continued, another student, from Mesa College, died of a cocaine overdose at an SDSU fraternity house on Feb. 26, the DEA said.
Some drugs bought and sold by students were traced to gangs linked to Mexican cartels, according to the DEA. Agents collected about $100,000 worth of drugs, including cocaine, ecstasy pills, hallucinogenic mushrooms and high-grade marijuana that were being advertised in 'resale quantities' between members of the fraternity and other students."

There was an article in the Wall Street Journal on Cindy McCain, John's wife. All I ever saw was this attractive woman standing beside John. I was surprised how talented and involved with world problems she is. This is a summary of the article.
She graduated from Southern Cal and was a special-needs teacher.After her Dad died she became involved with his beer distributing firm and is now the chairwoman. Sales have doubled since she has taken over from her father.
They have a marriage prenuptial agreement, her assets remain separate.
She is involved around the world clearing land mines - travels to these countries on a detonation team and service on their board.
They have a 19 year old serving in Iraq, another son in the Naval Academy, a daughter recently graduated from Columbia Univ., an adopted daughter in high school, and a son who is the finance guy at the beer firm.
Raised kids in Phoenix, Az rather than Washington DC.(better atmosphere) He commuted.
In 1991, Mrs. McCain came across a girl in an orphanage in Bangladesh. Mother Teresa implored Mrs. McCain to take the baby with severe cleft palate. She did so without first telling her husband. The couple adopted the girl who has had a dozen operations to repair her cleft palate and other medical problems.
They have a Family Foundation for children's causes.
She's active with "Halo Trust" - to clear land mines, provide water and food in war ravaged and developing countries.
She will join an overseas mission of "Operation Smile", a charity for corrective surgery on children's faces.
She has had two back surgeries and became addicted to pain killers. She talks openly about it which she says is part of the recovery process.
I'm surprised the media is so quiet about her attributes. She sounds more capable than Hillary or Obama. We would really get two for the price of one. A person with business and international experience. John did work for the firm for awhile when he left the Navy. She, however, has the real business experience.
