Certificate of Need, Citizens Research Council

Certificate of Need, Citizens Research Council [Mackinac Center]
Imagine a law that gave a government board the power to decide whether or not new grocery stores could be built, and whether existing ones could expand or install new equipment.
For example, a law that forced the Meijer’s near your house to go through a complex and lengthy bureaucratic process before it could add some new freezer cases, and prove the new capacity wouldn’t drive up overall grocery prices.
Sound nuts?
Welcome to the bizarre world of Michigan’s health care facility “Certificate of Need” law

The last time Republicans were roundly condemned as anti-science, it was for their resistance to destroying human embryos for stem cells.

In other words, as a major figure in the self-styled party of science, Edwards made an outlandish assurance worthy of a faith healer

CHINA BACKING AWAY FROM electric vehicle plans

Instapundit » Blog Archive » CHINA BACKING AWAY FROM electric vehicle plans
“Beijing appears to be rethinking its singular focus on electric vehicles as a way to reduce fuel consumption and seems ready to revise its alternative-energy vehicle estimates as it becomes increasingly evident that the city’s electric vehicle targets were completely unrealistic.
Beijing – and in some ways, the whole of China – had set out to leapfrog conventional engine technology by developing and manufacturing huge amounts of electric vehicles.
In particular, the city had hoped its push to develop plug-ins would give it an advantage over the West in electric vehicle technology.
But hopes and dreams don’t always jive with reality.”

Arrested for Riding Bike to School

Bike Walk Tennessee: Arrested for Riding Bike to School
Arrested for Riding Bike to School
Could you be arrested for allowing your 5'th grade child to ride her bike one mile to school?
That certainly seems crazy as we try to encourage active life styles for our kids.
That certainly seems crazy as we try to promote safe routes to school programs.
That certainly seems crazy as we talk of an obesity epidemic amongst our children.
But that is what police in Elizabethton Tennessee are threatening.

Teresa Tryon said, "On August 25th my 10 year daughter arrived home via police officer, requested to speak to me on the front porch of my home. The officer informed me that in his 'judgement' it was unsafe for my daughter to ride her bike to school."

Ms Tryon called the mayor's office and the chief of police office in order to determine what laws she was breaking by allowing her daughter to ride her bike to school. Her daughter's route to school was reasonably safe.

Major Verran of the police department returned Ms Tryon's call. She said he told me, "He had spoke with the District Attorney's office who advised that until the officer can speak with Child Protective Services that if I allow my daughter to ride/walk to school I will be breaking the law and treated accordingly.

She asked, "What law she would be breaking to which the answer was 'child neglect'".

Ms Tryon confirm with Major Verran that her daughter was indeed breaking no laws at any level, but it was Ms Tryon who was breaking the law by allowing her daughter to ride/walk to school. Even though it only takes her daughter 7 - 9 minutes to bicycle to school, she is expected to ride the bus.

A Short Primer on the National Debt

John Steele Gordon: A Short Primer on the National Debt - WSJ.com
Many blame the Bush tax cuts for adversely impacting federal revenues, causing the debt to spiral upwards.
But that is just not true.
Federal revenues declined by almost 12% in the early years of the decade, but when the tax cuts fully kicked in in 2003, the economy began to grow strongly again and federal revenues increased 44% in the next four years, while unemployment fell to 4.2% from 6.2%.
Federal outlays in those four years increased by only 26.4%, and while the debt-to-GDP ratio increased to 64.8% by 2007, that was still well below what it had been in 1994.

It’s somewhat difficult to judge the performance of a president with all the factors that need to be considered and trying to figure out the president’s effect on them, but perhaps the best way to accurately assess the effectiveness of a president is to judge him against the expected performance of a sack of hammers in a similar situation (which is known as the “Coolidge Test”).

Basically, the question is: Instead of electing the current president, would the country have been better off taking a burlap sack to Ace Hardware, filling it with approximately one hundred dollars worth of hammers, and placing that in the Oval Office?

US jobs on line as EPA moves

US jobs on line as EPA moves--Michael A. Walsh - NYPOST.com
Get ready for the sacrifice of tens of thousands more American jobs (at least) to feed the fantasy of “clean energy.”
Even as the “green jobs” promise proves to be a lie, the Obama administration is getting set to force the shutdown of countless power plants across half the nation.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s new Cross-State Air Pollution Rule, announced last month, will affect coal-fired electric plants in at least 27 midwestern and eastern states.
Set to take effect next year, the rule could shutter up to a fifth of the nation’s generating capacity.

With coal providing 45 percent of the nation’s energy, utility companies warn of an economic “train wreck” if the regulations -- based on Bush-era EPA proposals that the federal courts threw out in 2008 -- take effect.

One Wisconsin utility says its costs would jump $32.6 million next year, while the head of the Texas Public Utility Commission says the rules could lead to rolling blackouts -- especially given the short time the utilities have to comply with Washington’s iron fist.

This is not some minor tweak.

Obama's jihad against electric power will destroy companies, jobs and lives!

Obama’s EPA is Killing More Jobs than Economy Can Create

Brown: Obama’s EPA is Killing More Jobs than Economy Can Create responses from FERC Commissioners to an inquiry from Congress regarding the degree of agency coordination on the impact of the agency's new rules clearly shows the EPA statements were not truthful. Obama's eco-loonies are not only destroying our businesses, they're lying about and getting caught.

Why Obama Can't Lead

Articles: Why Obama Can't Lead
For 22 years he attended the church services led by Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
African-Americans who attended his and other black liberation theology church services in Chicago are taught that their options are limited by the "other," and this other is white society.
Personal choice is not the route to success; choices are limited by the overwhelmingly oppressive power of dominant white America.
America is not, for Rev. Wright's paradigm, a land of opportunity, but instead a land of oppression.

In this political culture, the black political leader does not encourage his people to move forward, but rather convinces them that they cannot move forward.
Whatever choices they make, their future is determined not by personal choice, but by the restrictive confines of white society.
This is why actor-comedian Bill Cosby is viciously attacked when he suggests that African-Americans take responsibility for their own choices.

We see this in Muskegon with too many of the older local black leaders.
Thankfully the new voices (and some old, like Rillistine Wilkins) see personal choice and opportunity as positive options.

Three Dead In Weekend Air Show Accidents

Three Dead In Weekend Air Show Accidents

It was a tragic weekend for air shows as three fatal accidents occurred, killing a wingwalker and solo aerobatics performer in the U.S. and a member of the Royal Air Force's Red Arrows at a show in England.

On Sunday, wingwalker Todd Green was trying to perform his signature transfer from a wing to the skid of a helicopter when he fell about 200 feet to his death at the Selfridge Air Show near Detroit. By tragic coincidence, Kyle Franklin, whose wingwalking wife Amanda died of burns suffered in a March crash in Texas, was performing in his first air show since his wife's death and witnessed the accident. "It's really tragic," Franklin told reporters. "We are not thrill seekers trying to cheat death. We love what we do. We all know the risks involved."

On Saturday, Red Arrows pilot Flt. Lt. Jon Egging died after a low-level ejection in his Hawk aircraft at the Bournemouth Air Show and Bryan Jensen was killed when his highly modified Pitts Special, called The Beast, crashed on the field at the Kansas City Aviation Expo Air Show.

Egging was in formation with the Red Arrows when he split from the others and called a Mayday. Witnesses said he maneuvered the small jet trainer away from populated areas. His body was found face down in a river, not far from the wreckage of his aircraft. His wife and other members of his family attended the air show. Egging is being hailed as a hero. Jensen, a Delta Airlines 747 pilot, had been performing in air shows for 15 years. The aircraft, which had a modified Russian radial engine boosted to 412 horsepower, impacted vertically and caught fire.

Muskegon County Rotary Park to get playground, fishing pier if grant awarded

Muskegon County Rotary Park to get playground, fishing pier if grant awarded MLive.com
Based on the proposed project's budget, the most expensive parts are installation of the new playground, construction of the fishing pier, purchase of two barrier-free bathrooms and addition of a parking lot.

Aside from the fact that any "grant" is really borrowing from the earnings of our children and grandchildren, why do we need two more barrier-free bathrooms when we have two barrier-free bathrooms at Heritage Landing that are closed down...even during Summer Celebration?

* At a cost that Shapiro estimates in the millions of dollars, he said his benefits to athletes included but were not limited to cash, prostitutes, entertainment in his multimillion-dollar homes and yacht, paid trips to high-end restaurants and nightclubs, jewelry, bounties for on-field play (including bounties for injuring opposing players), travel and, on one occasion, an abortion."

David Kolb: Can Michigan Democrats catch up to Wisconsin and Ohio?

David Kolb: Can Michigan Democrats catch up to Wisconsin and Ohio? MLive.com
"Will Michigan “Go Blue” again in the 2012 presidential elections?
I remain unconvinced, and I’m an optimist."

What a surprise!

As David Kolbe continues his pro-union, anti-employer crusade, his disdain for the simple American looking for a job begins to filter through his rhetoric.

What he misses (by design?) is the reality that the business climate in Wisconsin and Ohio has improved markedly.
Employment is up, state revenue is up and employers are flocking to the newly "red" states.

Because of the pro-employer policies of the governors and legislatures of Ohio and Wisconsin, more employees are earning a paycheck-and paying taxes.

Get the connection? Employers.....employees...?

That's good for workers, taxpayers and those who need the safety net that only profitable companies and hard working employees can guarantee.

Instead, Kolbe adopts the divisive, pure politics of the MoveOn.org and ACORN playbook.

Obama has taken the same big spending, anti-employer stance.

How's that working out for you?
