Nehlen argues the media is eager to project an innocent meaning onto the term, which is often used to refer to the journey of the Islamic prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina.
 It can also be used in a more abstract, spiritual context as a kind of “flight from sin.”
But Nehlen says there is a more sinister meaning, as the term can also refer to conquest via immigration.
