Consumer Reports Says 42 Percent Want More Taxes On Soda | Science Codex:
"Consumer Reports took a survey of 1,010 adults to gauge interest in using “behavior” or “sin” taxes as government weapons against obesity.
Image result for government tax meme...Seeking government revenue, municipalities across the nation are seeking to hike taxes on some sugar-sweetened drinks (but controversially not others) as a way to reduce sugar consumption and calories and help prevent obesity and related chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
Though it has failed in cities like Berkeley, calories went up rather than down while soda revenue simply shifted to surrounding areas, while in Philadelphia it's cheaper to buy beer than soda, Consumer Reports seeks to lend credibility to calls for more.
Namely, that the public is demanding more taxes.
...With over 60 percent of people overweight, it makes sense that 42 percent might believe higher taxes will prevent it, but that has never been the case.
In New York City, as the American Council on Science and Health has shown, huge tax increases just led to a huge black market, and when government told police to crack down on sales of individual cigarettes to protect declining cigarette tax revenue, the highly controversial death of Eric Garner occurred.
That's the problem with government controlling behavior...."
