Janitors union OKs strike if contract talks fail | Crain's Detroit Business:
"With contract negotiations ongoing, unionized janitors have voted to strike if an agreement isn't reached with employers by July 31.
See the source imageService Employees International Union Local 1 announced the vote results Monday evening alongside a vigil in front of One Campus Martius in downtown Detroit, according to a news release.
The union's 1,700 janitors could walk out of their jobs starting Aug. 1, if talks aren't fruitful.
SEIU Local 1 is calling for at least $15 per hour wages and more benefits in a three-year contract. Contract negotiations began June 20.
Around 400 janitors attended the vigil, voting for the strike unanimously, union spokeswoman Izabela Miltko-Ivkovich said in an email.
..."If they choose to strike, this will affect not only downtown buildings, but also 500 [Detroit schools] custodians as well as a couple hundred of janitors at the airport," Miltko-Ivkovich said in an email earlier Monday.
The SEIU local in June launched a "Fight for 15" campaign...
The campaign also supports a $15 wage and union rights for fast food, airport and other workers, the news release said."
