The Incredible Campaign Against Plastic Straws | Orange Power
"Environmental activists have spent decades making it more difficult to wash and reuse beverage containers and they’re also not too keen on the items that we throw away.
Now along comes the current campaign to rid the world of plastic straws. 
Some companies in the hospitality industry have lately agreed to try to force their customers to sip through paper. Meanwhile politicians in various jurisdictions are seeking to mandate the end of plastic.
...In an episode oddly reminiscent of the 1980s scare that Americans were running out of landfill space and would soon be swimming in garbage, this latest compelling factoid has been useful in arguing that a world awash in plastic must change its ways or face certain catastrophe.
But perhaps fast-food joints should pause for a moment before asking anyone to consume a milkshake without the benefit of plastic.
