Alleged Mexican drug dealer disappears after low bond, upsetting Detroit police chief - mlive.com
"DETROIT – Detroit police Chief James Craig said he’s “disappointed” and “troubled” that a man arrested with enough narcotics to earn a life sentence could flee to Mexico after a Detroit-area judge required him to pay a bond of just $200.
Speaking with the media on Friday, Craig asked why Mexican national Jose Antonio Lopez, who he described as a mid-to-high level drug dealer, was treated by a Romulus magistrate as if he were someone who stole a Hersey candy bar a third time.
Lopez’s bond was set by a visiting weekend judge on March 2.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy told the Associated Press that her office typically doesn't have an assistant prosecutor at weekend arraignments but said a high bond in Lopez' case was a "no-brainer."
...Lopez didn’t appear in court on March 12. Defense attorney William Winters says he hasn’t heard from Lopez, according to the Associated Press."
