Middle School Reading Lists 100 Years Ago vs. Today | Intellectual Takeout
Middle School Reading Lists 100 Years Ago vs. Today
I recently dug up a 1908 curriculum manual in the Minnesota Historical Society archives. It provided instructions on everything from teacher deportment to recommended literature lists for various grades. As a book lover, I was especially interested in the latter!
With the exception of a few textbook-like anthologies, the chart below lists the recommended reading material for Minnesota 7th and 8th graders in 1908:
MN 7th and 8th Grade Reading List - 1908
With such a list in hand, I decided to examine if the common accusation that today’s education standards have been dumbed down is really true. To make sure I wasn’t unfairly weighting this survey in favor of the past, I went to one of the Twin Cities metro area's finest districts, namely, Edina Public Schools. Again, with the exception of a few textbook anthologies, the list below offers the reading options for their 7th and 8th grade students:
Edina 7th and 8th Grade Reading ListIn examining these lists, I noticed three important differences between the reading content of these two eras..."

How Might Cat 4 Dorian Compare to the Great Florida Keys Labor Day Hurricane of 1935? by Dr. Jeff Masters | Category 6 | Weather Underground

Above: Aerial view taken three days after the 1935 hurricane of the ill-fated rescue train sent into the Florida Keys to rescue veterans working on a railway. High winds and an estimated 18-foot storm surge swept the train off the tracks. The hurricane killed at least 257 veterans and 228 civilians. Image credit: State Library and Archives of Florida.
"...Tropical troubles on Labor Day weekend: 1935 and 2019
With an intensifying Hurricane Dorian bearing down towards Florida over Labor Day weekend, it’s worth comparing Dorian to another famous Labor Day weekend hurricane: the great Florida Keys Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, the most intense landfalling hurricane in U.S. history
It is unlikely, but theoretically possible, that Dorian could grow as strong as the 1935 hurricane over the next several days.
Dorian will also likely be a much larger and longer-lived storm than the 1935 hurricane at landfall, which will raise the odds of widespread coastal surge.
Given the current track forecasts for Dorian, though, the storm is highly unlikely to make landfall at the 1935 storm’s record-breaking landfall intensity: 185 mph winds and a pressure of 892 mb.
1935 hurricane track
Figure 1. Track of the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane.

History of the 1935 hurricane

The Labor Day hurricane of 1935 developed very rapidly from a system that was classified as a tropical storm less than two days before landfall in the Keys. Brushing the south end of Andros Island in The Bahamas, the storm headed toward the north coast of Cuba before angling unexpectedly rightward and intensifying with astonishing speed as it approached the Keys. In just 42 hours, the 1935 hurricane intensified from a tropical storm with 70 mph winds to an incredibly intense Category 5 beast with 185 mph winds as it passed over the very warm waters of the Florida Straits.
The great Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 made landfall in the upper Florida Keys during the late evening hours of Monday, September 2, 1935—Labor Day. It was originally classified as having 160 mph winds at landfall, but a reanalysis done in 2014 concluded that the mighty storm made landfall with 185 mph winds and a central pressure of 892 mb--all-time landfall records for the Western Hemisphere...
Theory says Dorian could match the 1935 hurricane..."

"Glenn Reynolds: A key lesson of the Trump era is that every single allegedly neutral, nonpartisan, super-professional institution has turned out to be, in fact, a bunch of partisan hacks shilling for the permanent political party.
Voters can be forgiven for adopting a "burn it all down" attitude in response.
FTA: Perhaps you’ve seen former Chairs of the Federal Reserve defending the central bank’s independence and foreswearing all political intentions.
Fair enough.
But then what are we to make of former Fed monetary Vice Chair William Dudley’s marker that the Fed should help defeat President Trump in 2020?
...But Mr. Dudley seems to be saying the Fed should do nothing to assist the economy even if it heads into recession.
Then he goes further and essentially says the Fed should join The Resistance.
“There’s even an argument that the election itself falls within the Fed’s purview,” Mr. Dudley writes. “After all, Trump’s reelection arguably presents a threat to the U.S. and global economy, to the Fed’s independence and its ability to achieve its employment and inflation objectives. If the goal of monetary policy is to achieve the best long-term economic outcome, then Fed officials should consider how their decisions will affect the political outcome in 2020.”
Wow.
Talk about stripping the veil..."

Read how they cheat us!-----The great failure of the climate models

Image result for global warming lieThe great failure of the climate models
"Computer models of the climate are at the heart of calls to ban the cheap, reliable energy that powers our thriving economy and promotes healthier, longer lives.
...Yet, the real-world data aren’t cooperating.
...Should we trust the computer models of doom?

  • ...The first adjustment changed how the temperature of the ocean surface is calculated, by replacing satellite data with drifting buoys and temperatures in ships’ water intake. The size of the ship determines how deep the intake tube is, and steel ships warm up tremendously under sunny, hot conditions. The buoy temperatures, which are measured by precise electronic thermistors, were adjusted upwards to match the questionable ship data. Given that the buoy network became more extensive during the pause, that’s guaranteed to put some artificial warming in the data.
  • The second big adjustment was over the Arctic Ocean, where there aren’t any weather stations. In this revision, temperatures were estimated from nearby land stations. This runs afoul of basic physics. Even in warm summers, there’s plenty of ice over much of the Arctic Ocean. Now, for example, when the sea ice is nearing its annual minimum, it still extends part way down Greenland’s east coast. As long as the ice-water mix is well-stirred (like a glass of ice water), the surface temperature stays at the freezing point until all the ice melts. So, extending land readings over the Arctic Ocean adds nonexistent warming to the record.

Further, both global and United States data have been frequently adjusted.
There is nothing scientifically wrong with adjusting data to correct for changes in the way temperatures are observed and for changes in the thermometers.
But each serial adjustment has tended to make the early years colder, which increases the warming trend.
That’s wildly improbable..."

In 2019 alone, the White House has directed 17 major immigration and border changes. The administration is taking real action — and voters will take notice.
This summer, Heritage Action for America polled 4,500 voters about their top political concerns. The results were clear: immigration is their top issue. Almost two-thirds of voters in swing states acknowledged there is an emergency at the border, and most voters across the country said that illegal immigration affects their life. And among every demographic category, abuse of social services was the top worry about illegal immigration — an issue the public charge rule directly addresses.

Let's count them down.
For starters, I would advocate for a robust and ever-expanding welfare state—programs like Medicaid, food stamps, unemployment insurance, etc.
I would recognize that an effective recipe for keeping poor people poor is to create incentives that push them into decisions that prevent them from climbing out of poverty..."

"Researchers from Harvard University have made an interesting and hilarious discovery with regards to wind power, which actually causes more global warming than the burning of fossil fuels does.
While massive wind farms are said by some to be the “renewable” energy source of the future, two Harvard scientists have found that the spinning blades of these massive metal monstrosities create more climate warming than coal plants, as one prominent example of the fossil fuel energy that climate alarmists claim is creating global warming.
In fact, wind turbines are more “polluting” in terms of the heat they give off than any fossil fuel energy source currently in use, which just goes to show that so-called “clean” energy is, at least in this case, a myth..."
