Colorado residents seek to secede to join Wyoming, citing shift in state's priorities | OutThere Colorado
"Dubbed "Weld County, Wyoming," a group has popped up with the goal of getting an initiative added to their county's November 2021 ballot that would "instruct Weld County Commissioners to engage and explore the annexation of Weld County with the State of Wyoming's Legislature."
Located in northeast Colorado, Weld County is one of Colorado's top agricultural counties, with members of the group citing a shift in Colorado's priorities away from this industry, as well as oil, gas, and gun rights, as a reason for their proposal.
If the proposal is eventually included on the November ballot and the initiative passes, the Colorado legislature and the Wyoming legislature would have to approve it, along with possible approval from Colorado voters and Congress required, according the Mayor of Erie, Colorado.
Weld County has an estimated population (2019) of around 325,000 residents while Wyoming has an estimated population (2019) of around 579,000 residents statewide.
Weld County joining the state would mean a huge uptick in population and a big shift in population distribution.
