There exist no self-sufficient islands, not even North America. 
Those thinking so have no idea the scale, nor the demands, of world trade. 
Your morning coffee doesn't just appear out of nowhere, nor does anything else you use. 
And it's complicated, because disparate factors all end up coordinating without even knowledge of each other, frequently not even speaking the same language.
