"While there are many compelling stories of the efforts to protect commerce from the dreaded U-boats during the Great War, the contribution of the United States Coast Guard, only newly created in 1915 and serving under the operational control of the Navy during war, is an even more overlooked part of the conflict.  
Yet the Coasties served, and died, in the Battle of the Atlantic. 
On September 26, 1918, the United States suffered its greatest naval combat loss of the First World War."
