"Have you ever wondered what the normal utilization rates for a hospital actually are?"

"Have you ever wondered what the normal utilization rates for a hospital actually are?
I didn't, so I asked a woman MD who used to run an emergency room.
She said that any hospital with less than an 85% utilization was a failing hospital because no one wanted to pay doctors and hospitals to stay open just in case someone needed them.
  • Peak utilization during winter months was usually in the high 90s when the hospital system was working correctly.
But it sure makes for good headlines…
