The media report this?-----"Hazard a guess at the biggest source of atmospheric CO2 and you'll more than likely get it wrong..."

Ian Christensen
"Hazard a guess at the biggest source of atmospheric CO2 and you'll more than likely get it wrong.
  • Coal fired Power stations? Nup.
  • Internal Combustion engines, cars, planes, ships? Nup.
  • Volcanoes? Getting warmer but Nup.
  • The largest source of CO2 is India and China, but not from man made sources.
The biggest emitter of CO2 on the planet is the Himalayan mountain range.
As the Indian tectonic plate slides under the Asian plate, rocks fracture, and under the influence of water action on the rocks, CO2 is released, some as gas, and some dissolved in the water as calcium carbonate. The Himalaya isn't short of water, particularly during the monsoon, and it is tectonically the most active region on the surface of the planet.
Hazard a guess at the biggest source of atmospheric oxygen and you'll probably get it wrong.
  • The Amazon Basin rainforests? Nup, only account for about 10%.
  • Crops and natural forests? Nup. < 5%.
The largest source of atmospheric oxygen is algae in the top 1M of the oceans. It produces 80% of all oxygen in the air..."
