Michigan a Right to Work State?

The American Spectator : Michigan a Right to Work State?
"Oakland County Sherriff Mike Bouchard, who is running for the Republican nomination for governor, called for making Michigan a right to work State in a press release and commercial Wednesday.
He pointed out that average right to work states have an 8 percent unemployment rate, compared with Michigan's rate of 13.8 percent."

This could be a game changer in the Michigan gov. race.
I'm hearing from many GOPer primary voters about this "bold" move.
That is would be tagged as bold says much about the republican party today.
I must say that Michigan as a RTW state sounds real good to me!

Dodd-Frank: What you always wanted

Dodd-Frank: What you always wanted NMPolitics.net – Get the real story
"Now, get this. The Dodd-Frank Act demands a measly: 533 required regulatory rulemakings, 93 special reports, and 60 studies.
By contrast, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 only had 16 rulemakings, no special reports and six studies.
My how the world has changed.
Get ready for regulation, regulation, and then a little more little regulation.

I can tell you one thing – Wall Street is definitely getting ready.
What does this mean?
More lobbyists, of course! (Exactly what the president campaigned against in 2008.)

From The Hill:
Consumer advocates and financial lobbyists are already preparing for years of debate before federal regulatory agencies are required to issue new rules.
“Game one over,” said Richard Hunt, president of the Consumer Bankers Association.
“Game two, regulators, beginning.”
It may be true that on the campaign trail, Obama promised that lobbyists “won’t find a job in my White House.”

Two things.
1) There are at least a dozen former lobbyists in the current White House, but that’s a moot point compared to the
2) onslaught of lobby jobs that are about to open up on account of this White House and their financial ‘reform’ bill.

Nice work!"

“Down a Rabbit Hole”
The Threat Posed by the Dodd Bill to the Private Sector
Summary

Americans for Limited Government has undertaken an analysis of provisions in the Dodd-Frank financial
sector takeover bill, HR 4173.
The analysis shows that the provisions creates a revolving “orderly liquidation fund,” with unlimited bailout-takeover authority rife for abuse.
This federal authority will endanger companies across the nation with unlimited government takeovers of their assets, operations, and ownership.

Read it all and fear for our country!

They appeared to be in good health and when I visited their neighbors, I had a chance to meet the young man (who's white) and appeared to be in his early 20s. He complained about how bad the job situation was. 'Man, I can't find work anywhere,' he said.
I was sorely tempted to ask why he didn't apply at one of the local stores that had a 'Help Wanted' sign in the window but that would have been a merely rhetorical question. Minimum-wage jobs can't compete with a full-service welfare system that sucks people into dependency."

The 3,200-watts of solar photovoltaic panels provide one-third of the electricity that Bryce's family consumes, slightly reducing his monthly power bill.
But the panels aren't without problems: The start-up costs were high, the inverter has already broken once, and the panels require regular cleaning.

Bryce quickly wondered if the panels were worth the investment, and he soon realized that the limits of solar power for his Texas home extended to the rest of the country:
Solar power won't run America anytime soon.

"Anyway, toward the end of today’s article Laffer has a stunning proposal:
Any government program that would reduce unemployment has to make working more attractive for both employer and employee. Since late 2007 the federal government has spent somewhere around $3.6 trillion to stimulate the economy.
That is a lot of money.
My suggestion would have been to take all $3.6 trillion and declare a federal tax holiday for 18 months.
No income tax, no corporate profits tax, no capital gains tax, no estate tax, no payroll tax (FICA) either employee or employer, no Medicare or Medicaid taxes, no federal excise taxes, no tariffs, no federal taxes at all, which would have reduced federal revenues by $2.4 trillion annually.
Can you imagine where employment would be today?
How does a 2.5% unemployment rate sound?

It’s a valid point.
Yes, it is.
In fact, it makes perfect sense.

However, there’s no room for “income redistribution,” graft, rewarding political allies and punishing political enemies, or increasing the power and control of the federal government in it.

Therefore there is no chance in hell of it ever happening, certainly not under any Socialist Democrat administration, and especially not under the Obamarxist administration.

Sadly, not under a GOP administration, either."

Inadequate Spending? NetRight Daily
"Specifically Krugman blasted several world leaders (although obviously not the leader of the “free world”) for what he called “preaching the need for belt-tightening when the real problem is inadequate spending.”

And no, that’s not a typo.
He actually said “inadequate spending.”

According to these “New Keynesians,” the unsustainable government growth that preceded the most recent economic downturn apparently wasn’t enough.
Nor was the unprecedented barrage of bailouts, taxpayer-funded guarantees, freshly-printed greenbacks and deficit spending that Washington threw at the problem over the last two years.
And let’s not forget what has been heaped on top of all that “stimulus” spending — a $2.5 trillion socialized medicine plan that represents one of the largest expansions of entitlement spending in American history.

Amazingly, despite the clear failure of the “stimulus” — and despite the fact that excess entitlement spending is what has driven the eurozone to its present precariousness — the rallying cry of these big government backers appears to be “we have only just begun to spend.”

Time for a Little Perspective on Oil Spills

American Thinker: Time for a Little Perspective on Oil Spills
"But these incidents are dwarfed by the 1979 Gulf of Mexico Pemex/Ixtoc I Oil blowout -- until now the largest accidental spill in history. This spill lasted almost ten months, releasing between ten and thirty thousand barrels per day (BPD). In total, it released approximately 3.3 million barrels into the Gulf.

Using the current upper end estimate of 60,000 BPD, the Deepwater Horizon spill has now surpassed the Pemex spill, so it can rightfully claim its place as record-holder for accidental spills. But it still is dwarfed by Saddam Hussein's deliberate release of somewhere between 5.7 and 11 million barrels from tankers ten miles off the Kuwaiti coast.

While the Pemex spill affected 162 miles of coastline in Texas and Mexico, the long-term environmental consequences were negligible. As one marine biologist put it, 'To be honest, considering the magnitude of the spill, we thought the Ixtoc spill was going to have catastrophic effects for decades. ... But within a couple of years, almost everything was close to 100 percent normal again.'"

Dutch agency admits mistake in UN climate report

Dutch agency admits mistake in UN climate report - Yahoo! News
"The Dutch agency accepted responsibility for one mistake by the IPCC when it reported in 2005 that 55 percent of
the Netherlands is below sea level, when only 26 percent is.
The report should have said 55 percent is prone to flooding, including river flooding.
....
The second previously reported error claimed the Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035, which the Dutch agency partly traced to a report on the likely shrinking of glaciers by the year 2350."

Investors Fear Rising Risk of US Regional Defaults

Investors Fear Rising Risk of US Regional Defaults - CNBC
"Investors are worried that the risk of default for US local governments is growing, amid signs that some regions are facing the same type of difficulty in curbing pension and budget deficits as some eurozone countries"

“The risk in the second half of the year is that investor attention switches from Europe to the US,” said Robert Parker, senior adviser at Credit Suisse Securities, who singled out parts of California, as well as towns and cities in Illinois, Michigan and New York state as among the most vulnerable.
“You will see investor concern about the viability of those cities and therefore you will see, inevitably, further spread widening in the municipal bond market.”

Why aren’t businesses hiring?

Why aren’t businesses hiring? Washington Examiner
"Then a simple final paragraph, which could have come from a Wall Street Journal or Washington Examiner editorial:
“Uncertainty: there has been a tremendous amount of change over the last 12 months. Businesses are still trying to figure out what that means for their own bottom line. Until there are firm answers, they will freeze hiring.”

Hmmm.
What kind of change over the last 12 months?
Who’s been producing that change?
Stewart doesn’t say, but it’s not too hard to figure out.
This is as pungent and concise an indictment of the Obama Democrats’ vast expansion of the size and reach of government as I’ve seen anywhere."

"If you were African-American living in the era of President Barack Obama, would you hate the Fourth of July because it reminded you of slavery and economic inequality?

You would if your name was Julianne Malveaux and you were the syndicated columnist that also serves as the president of Bennett College, the historically black women's school in Greensboro, North Carolina."

Had Enough Therapy?: The Hotness Gap

Had Enough Therapy?: The Hotness Gap
"You have to wonder why Baird is so thoroughly out of sorts about hotness gap between Republican and Democratic women, or better, between conservative women and feminists.

Why is she so worried that leftist men are now fantasizing about hot Republican women?

Here's a guess. Feminism and radical leftism has always tried to deal with dissent by making the dissenters into outcasts and pariahs.
If you disagree with the basic dogmas of feminist ideology you will, in many communities, be shunned from polite society."

There are many places in this country where men hesitate to admit that they are Republicans because they will not just lose friends, but they will lose dating opportunities.

Many women openly brag that they will not date Republicans; often they will not even talk with them.

Say something nice about Sarah Palin in many communities and you will immediately be labeled as deranged.

I do not even want to think about what it is going to do to your sex life.

If all women are feminists, then this strategy can work.
But if the most attractive women are Republicans, then it will start breaking down.
If a man had to choose between a fantasy date with Nikki Haley or one with Elena Kagan, which would he choose?
If he had to choose between being married to Sarah Palin or being married to Hillary Clinton, who would he prefer?

Progressive Mag Editor Hates Fourth of July: Patriotism Leads to Fascism NewsBusters.org
"As amazing as it might seem, the 27-year-old Matthew Rothschild was just getting warmed up (h/t Weasel Zippers):

You can call me unpatriotic if you'd like, but really I'm anti-patriotic.
I've been studying fascism lately, and there is one inescapable fact about it:
Nationalism is the egg that hatches fascism.
And patriotism is but the father of nationalism.
Patriotism is not something to play with. It's highly toxic. When ingested, it corrodes the rational faculties. [...]
Plus, it's a war toy, wheeled out whenever a leader needs to improve his ratings by attacking some other country-often after invoking God's name, too. [...]
But as for me, between God, country, and apple pie, I'll take the apple pie."

Plastic Bags: Untapped Tax Gold Mine? - ABC News
"Who knew the lightweight disposable sacks, which millions of shoppers use every day to lug home groceries and take-out, could help states bring in much needed revenue.

Starting next year, Seattle residents will pay for disposable bags at stores.

At least, that's what some policymakers have proposed.

Only one US city – Washington, D.C. – has successful instituted a plastic bag tax, but at least 13 other states are considering one."

Where Did the Tea-Party Anger Come From?

Works and Days » Where Did the Tea-Party Anger Come From?
"But at some point — perhaps triggered by the radical increase in the public sector under Obama, the militancy of the SEIU, or the staggering debts — the public snapped and has had it with whining union officials and their political enablers who always threaten to cut off police and fire protection if we object that there are too many unproductive, unnecessary, but too highly paid employees at the Social Service office. In short, sometime in the last ten years public employees were directly identified with most of what is now unsustainable in the U.S. The old idea that a public servant gave up a competitive salary for job security was redefined as hitting the jackpot."

Oh Canada! All Eyes Down South!

Pension Pulse: Oh Canada! All Eyes Down South!
"Canada's economic recovery, which appeared so strong earlier this year, seems to have hit a rough patch.

The country's gross domestic product was unchanged in April from the month before, Statistics Canada said Wednesday.

Economists were expecting 0.2 per cent growth in GDP for the month.

That compared to a 0.6-per-cent GDP expansion in March.

It marked the first time in eight months that the Canadian economy did not expand and comes on the heels of 6.1- per-cent annualized growth in the first quarter of this year, the strongest expansion in more than a decade.

Statistics Canada said there was a 'large decline' in the retail sector in April, and lesser contractions in manufacturing and utilities, which were offset by gains in mining, wholesale, the public sector and construction."

Health overhaul may mean longer ER waits, crowding

Health overhaul may mean longer ER waits, crowding
"– Emergency rooms, the only choice for patients who can't find care elsewhere, may grow even more crowded with longer wait times under the nation's new health law.

That might come as a surprise to those who thought getting 32 million more people covered by health insurance would ease ER crowding.
It would seem these patients would be able to get routine health care by visiting a doctor's office, as most of the insured do.
But it's not that simple."

The Dodd-Frank Financial Fiasco

John B. Taylor: The Dodd-Frank Financial Fiasco - WSJ.com
"The sheer complexity of the 2,319-page Dodd-Frank financial reform bill is certainly a threat to future economic growth.
But if you sift through the many sections and subsections, you find much more than complexity to worry about.

The main problem with the bill is that it is based on a misdiagnosis of the causes of the financial crisis, which is not surprising since the bill was rolled out before the congressionally mandated Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission finished its diagnosis."
