Steyn: US 'doomed' in wake of Pop Tart gun suspension

Steyn: US 'doomed' in wake of Pop Tart gun suspension [AUDIO] | The Daily Caller

Steyn, author of “After America: Get Ready for Armageddon,” compared this generation of children, who may have felt threatened by the so-called Pop Tart gun, to the American generation that stormed the beaches of Normandy.
“You’re doomed, America,” Steyn said. “You’re done for. No society can survive this level of stupidity. The school counselor is available to meet with any students who are traumatized by hearing reports of some guy four grades below them who nibbles a Pop Tart into a gun-like shape. I’ve never subscribed to this whole greatest generation thing, you know. But you look at those guys, they weren’t much older than the kids from the school. A lot of them were like 17, 18 years old. And they’re storming out of these transport ships in the churning waters of the English Channel and the North Sea, and they’re landing on the beaches of Normandy. And their getting out of these, and they are storming up the beaches and they’re taking German gunfire and all the rest.”
Steyn went on to say that society cannot survive this sort of “institutionalized stupidity.”
“Do you think if you raised people so that you make a school counselor to available to them in cased they’ve been traumatized by someone who was nibbled a Pop Tart into the shape of a gun — do you think if they’re ever called upon to get out those ships and the storm the beaches of Normandy, do you think they’re going to be up to that? ‘Oh no look, the Germans, they’re all holding Pop Tarts! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!’ No society can survive this level of stupidity. These small things are not small. They tell you a lot about the institutionalized stupidity of our institutions.”

Green Cars Have a Dirty Little Secret

Bjorn Lomborg: Green Cars Have a Dirty Little Secret - WSJ.com:
"When an electric car rolls off the production line, it has already been responsible for 30,000 pounds of carbon-dioxide emission. The amount for making a conventional car: 14,000 pounds."....But remember, the production of the electric car has already resulted in sizeable emissions—the equivalent of 80,000 miles of travel in the vehicle. So unless the electric car is driven a lot, it will never get ahead environmentally.
And that turns out to be a challenge.
Consider the Nissan Leaf. It has only a 73-mile range per charge. Drivers attempting long road trips, as in one BBC test drive, have reported that recharging takes so long that the average speed is close to six miles per hour—a bit faster than your average jogger. To make matters worse, the batteries in electric cars fade with time, just as they do in a cellphone. Nissan estimates that after five years, the less effective batteries in a typical Leaf bring the range down to 55 miles.
As the MIT Technology Review cautioned last year: "Don't Drive Your Nissan Leaf Too Much."

Are You Living in a Fourth Amendment Exclusion Zone?
"It all started in 2008, when the DHS declared that certain ‘border control agents’ could search the electronic belongings of individuals without suspicion — let alone a warrant.
Bypassing the rights provided by the Constitutional to every citizen of the United States, the DHS immediately came under fire for the policy.
The response?
The DHS promised to have the policy reviewed within 120 days.
The catch?
The review was done two years late and by their own review panel known as the Civil Liberties Impact division.
Absent of any independent input in their secretive review, the DHS published a brief document stating that the suspicionless search policy was perfectly reasonable.
Laptops, cell phones, camcorders, and all other gadgets were open game for the DHS within the ‘borders’ of the country."

President Barack Obama: "I am not a dictator"

President Barack Obama: "I am not a dictator" | The Daily Caller

from my "friends" at barackobama.com

"Friend --
Today, because congressional Republicans refused to act, devastating budget cuts known as the sequester are going into effect.
They're self-inflicted wounds, and they didn't have to happen.
Congress can stop all of this right away -- and pursue a balanced approach to deficit reduction.

That's what the vast majority of Americans want, and yesterday, more than 100,000 Americans called on Congress to be reasonable about the budget.

Legislators Chip Away at Proposal A Property Tax Limits

Legislators Chip Away at Proposal A Property Tax Limits [Michigan Capitol Confidential]
"Not surprisingly, Rep. McCready highlights the security provision of his bill, but also argues it will save taxpayer money by giving local citizens an option that doesn't put them in debt for technology.
"A millage for school security or technology will be subject to a vote of the residents — the same as it has always been," he said.
"Bond proposals create future debt.
A sinking fund millage raises X amount each year without borrowing and paying interest."

However, this sidesteps the real issue of adding technology to the allowable uses of sinking funds that have already been approved by voters for more limited purposes — in effect a bait-and-switch.
It also raises the issue of whether technology (mostly computers and software) are long-lived capital assets that justify incurring long-term taxpayer debt."

ITALY BEHIND RISE IN EUROZONE JOBLESS TO RECORD

News from The Associated Press:
The rise in the Italian rate, which comes as the country is stuck in an 18-month recession and after a wave of economic reforms and tight budgetary controls introduced to control the country's debt, was also the main reason why unemployment across the 17 European Union countries that use the euro rose to a record 11.9 percent during January

SEIU 'Skim Tracker' Stops Ticking

SEIU 'Skim Tracker' Stops Ticking [Michigan Capitol Confidential]
"The SEIU "skim tracker" has finally stopped.
The scrolling money ticker had been calculating the amount of money the Service Employees International Union was taking from home-based caregivers because of a forced unionization scheme that was orchestrated in 2005 when Jennifer Granholm was governor.
As of today, March 1, Michigan's home-based caregivers no longer are unionized. The contract between the union and the dummy employer used for the scheme officially ended Feb. 28."

Mayor Bloomberg: Don’t Panic About the Sequester

Mayor Bloomberg: Don’t Panic About the Sequester | Politicker
"“We are spending money we don’t have,” Mr. Bloomberg explained.
“It’s not like your household. In your household, people are saying, ‘Oh, you can’t spend money you don’t have.’
That is true for your household because nobody is going to lend you an infinite amount of money.
When it comes to the United States federal government, people do seem willing to lend us an infinite amount of money. …
Our debt is so big and so many people own it that it’s preposterous to think that they would stop selling us more. It’s the old story: If you owe the bank $50,000, you got a problem.
If you owe the bank $50 million, they got a problem.
And that’s a problem for the lenders.
They can’t stop lending us more money.”"
