There’s a Simple Reason Today’s Students ‘Know Nothing’ | Intellectual Takeout

There’s a Simple Reason Today’s Students ‘Know Nothing’ | Intellectual Takeout
"I recently had an interesting conversation about education with a young man who grew up in Mexico City.
Although we never got on to the topic of whether the American or Mexican system of education system is better, he did have an observation about a major difference between the two.
See the source imageAmericans, he noted, don’t know their history very well.
He went on to explain that Mexican history was a very prominent part of the yearly curriculum and children learn it thoroughly.
As I thought about it, I realized that the U.S. education system spends far more time focusing on math and reading skills.
These subjects are certainly necessary and worthy of attention, but is it possible the heavy emphasis on them is actually a detriment to students?
...“Current education practices show that reading comprehension is misunderstood.
It’s treated like a general skill that can be applied with equal success to all texts.
Rather, comprehension is intimately intertwined with knowledge.”
Unfortunately, that knowledge is not being passed on to students..."

[H]ardOCP: Town Rejects Comcast and Chooses to Build Its Own Broadband Network

[H]ardOCP: Town Rejects Comcast and Chooses to Build Its Own Broadband Network
At a recent special town meeting, voters in Charlemont, Massachusetts rejected a proposal from the Comcast Cable Co. for cable internet.
Instead the town decided to build their own municipal fiber network.
The cost of the Comcast proposal would have been $462,123 and would have only covered 96% of the households in the area.
Choosing to build their own network will cost the town an extra $1 million over 20 years, but the cost to taxpayers could be the same, as the town would not seek to make a profit on its citizens.
Plus the town will be able to sell its internet service to other areas for profit...

According to emails leaked exclusively to Breitbart News, Google employees began plotting to kick Breitbart News off of Google’s dominant ad services.
Rep. McCarthy said, “Third, we need to know that Google is living up to America’s belief in free expression and human ideals with foreign governments.”
McCarthy concluded in his statement on Monday, “We need to know that Google is on the side of the free world and that it will provide its services free of anti-competitive behavior, political bias, and censorship.”

Are We Free to Discuss America's Real Problems? - Imprimis

Are We Free to Discuss America's Real Problems? - Imprimis
See the source image"There is a lot of abstract talk these days on American college campuses about free speech and the values of free inquiry, with plenty of lip service being paid to expansive notions of free expression and the marketplace of ideas.
What I’ve learned through my recent experience of writing a controversial op-ed is that most of this talk is not worth much.
It is only when people are confronted with speech they don’t like that we see whether these abstractions are real to them.
The op-ed, which I co-authored with Larry Alexander of the University of San Diego Law School, appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer on August 9 under the title, “Paying the Price for the Breakdown of the Country’s Bourgeois Culture.”
It began by listing some of the ills afflicting American society:

  • Too few Americans are qualified for the jobs available.
  • Male working-age labor-force participation is at Depression-era lows.
  • Opioid abuse is widespread.
  • Homicidal violence plagues inner cities.
  • Almost half of all children are born out of wedlock, and even more are raised by single mothers.
  • Many college students lack basic skills, and high school students rank below those from two dozen other countries.

We then discussed the “cultural script”—a list of behavioral norms—that was almost universally endorsed between the end of World War II and the mid-1960s:

  • Get married before you have children and strive to stay married for their sake.
  • Get the education you need for gainful employment, work hard, and avoid idleness.
  • Go the extra mile for your employer or client.
  • Be a patriot, ready to serve the country.
  • Be neighborly, civic-minded, and charitable.
  • Avoid coarse language in public.
  • Be respectful of authority.
  • Eschew substance abuse and crime.

...The reactions to this piece raise the question of how unorthodox opinions should be dealt with in academia—and in American society at large.
...What those of us in academia should certainly not do is engage in unreasoned speech: hurling slurs and epithets, name-calling, vilification, and mindless labeling.
Likewise we should not reject the views of others without providing reasoned arguments.
Yet these once common standards of practice have been violated repeatedly at my own and at other academic institutions in recent years—and we increasingly see this trend in society as well..."

Students Can Now Retake Their Test if They Don’t Like Their Grade | Intellectual Takeout

Students Can Now Retake Their Test if They Don’t Like Their Grade | Intellectual Takeout:
We’ve all seen how participation trophies have overtaken the world of kid sports.
No longer is there one prize; instead, there are multiple awards for everything from first to tenth place.
...the testing retake syndrome is not limited to large, make-it-or-break it tests; instead, it is infiltrating almost every quiz that students sit for in hopes that students will better learn their lessons:
“Proponents of retakes believe they allow students who struggle with test-taking another chance to master the material, and say retakes help with overall retention.
Others point out that just because it takes some students longer to grasp a concept, it doesn’t mean they are less intelligent.
Still others say retakes reduce stress and pressure on already anxious students..."

EPA seeks to douse Obama-era Waters of the United States rule - Washington Times:

Image result for flickr commons images Water in ditchHouse Natural Resources Committee Chairman Rob Bishop, Utah Republican, said the proposed rule would provide “much-needed clarity and certainty for America’s farmers, contractors, landowners, and ranchers,” calling the Obama-era policy “a reckless expansion of federal control.”
“The 2015 rule was an expansion of federal power that used bureaucrat-speak to strip landowners of their rights and local governments of their ability to manage waters within their borders,” said Rep. Garret Graves, Louisiana Republican. “This new approach is the product of doing it the right way — openly, with the input of the American people.”

Three Reasons Beto Is the Democrats’ Candidate to Beat in 2020 | Election
"Former Rep. Robert “Beto” O’Rourke (D-TX) has been meeting with former President Barack Obama.
Beto O'Rourke at texas democratic conventionA meeting of these two minds makes a great deal of sense.
In Obama, the Democrats found a blank slate candidate on whom voters could project their wishes and dreams and he won two terms.
In O’Rourke, the Democrats may have found the answer to their struggles in Texas.
And if they can even become competitive in Texas, national politics will shift in the Democrats’ favor. Democrats see 2020 as an opportunity to topple President Trump.
Two years is a long time in politics, but at the same time it’s no time at all.
The 2020 primaries are just over a year away..."

"Summary: Horrific sexual harassment revelations have recently exposed several Hollywood bigwigs for the predatory hypocrites they really are.
For many entertainment elites, using the language of progressive selflessness is de rigueur; but behind the mask is a well-connected machine that uses politics to advance private business interests and the media to glamorize its image and cover up a tawdry history of sexual crimes...
...In the next installment of Hypocrisy, Thy Name is Hollywood, we expose how entertainment elites’ hypocrisy extends to their political activism."

Joe Arpaio sues CNN for defamation after network wrongly calls him a 'felon' - Washington Times

Joe Arpaio sues CNN for defamation after network wrongly calls him a 'felon' - Washington Times:

Image result for flickr commons images Joe ArpaioIn his lawsuit, filed in federal district court in Washington, D.C., Mr. Arpaio also sued Huffington Post and Rolling Stone, which he says also made inaccurate statements about his legal troubles.
Huffington Post reported that he was “sent to prison” for his conviction, but he says he never served a day. He said the article was uncorrected at the time of his lawsuit — though a correction was there as of Monday night, and archived versions showed it had been corrected last month.
Rolling Stone did “silently” change a web story inaccurately labeling him an “ex-felon,” Mr. Arpaio says, but he argued that without alerting readers to the change anyone who read the original piece wouldn’t know of the inaccuracy.

How Much Blood Would Leftists Be Willing To Shed To Disarm Patriotic Americans?

How Much Blood Would Leftists Be Willing To Shed To Disarm Patriotic Americans?
"My question for (democrat) Congressman Eric Swalwell is pretty simple: “How many Americans would you murder to achieve your goal of disarming us?”
It’s a fair question.
Swalwell is the MSNBC stalwart who recently wrote an op-ed advocating that the government confiscate the guns ..
See the source image...But Rep. Swalwell would make these citizens felons, though these patriots are only a threat to criminals and aspiring tyrants.
Of course, he wants to make these patriots felons because they are a threat to criminals and aspiring tyrants. After all, that’s what leftist Democrats like him are.
Rep. Swalwell, some people are going to fight rather than cave in, so what’s the number of bodies you would be willing to pile up to win?
...So, you’re going to have to kill some people to do what you want, and I just want to know how many you’re prepared to off to achieve your goal.
...Remember Waco?
The raid on David Koresh’s compound was because his weird band of misfits allegedly had scary, outlawed guns.
That’s why Democrat Janet Reno initially decided to send in the troops.
The government got four of our ATF agents killed, then slaughtered the resisters, including women and kids..."

Sac Bee: ‘Far-Fetched’ Kamala Harris Didn’t Know About Top Aide’s Harassment Lawsuit | Breitbart

Sac Bee: ‘Far-Fetched’ Kamala Harris Didn’t Know About Top Aide’s Harassment Lawsuit | Breitbart:

Image result for flickr commons images Kamala HarrisThe Sacramento Bee on Thursday evening blasted Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) for claiming she was unaware that one of her top aides, Larry Wallace, engaged in inappropriate workplace behavior that led to a $400,000 harassment settlement, saying Harris’s explanation was “far-fetched.”
Wallace, who had known Harris for 14 years, resigned on Wednesday evening after the Bee inquired about the $400,000 harassment settlement that resulted after his female assistant accused him of ordering her to crawl on her hands and knees underneath Wallace’s desk while she was wearing skirts and dresses and change the paper or ink in Wallace’s printer. Sometimes, Wallace ordered her to crawl under his desk in front of other male co-workers, according to the lawsuit.
